Selina “Soul” Davis, a longtime midday host on Perry Broadcasting-owned urban AC “Magic 100.9” WAKB and a teacher at Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, GA, is recovering at home while awaiting a heart transplant following a medical emergency earlier this year.
According to a report by "Fox54" WFXG-TV, Davis says she’s been off the air and away from the classroom since May 14, when her defibrillator shocked her at school. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors told her she would need either a heart transplant or a left ventricular assist device, also known as an LVAD.
Davis has lived with heart disease since 2010, when she was diagnosed at age 44. She said the episode came unexpectedly, despite her belief that she was managing her condition through medication, exercise and an active lifestyle.
“That was God’s sign to sit down,” Davis tells the TV station.
Since learning the severity of her condition, Davis has used social media to raise awareness about organ donation, saying the need becomes more personal once someone experiences it firsthand.
With Georgia ranking among the top 10 states in need of organ donors, Davis said misconceptions and fear surrounding organ donation remain common. “There’s a stigma that if you put it on your license, something will happen to you, or that organs will be sold — and that’s just not true,” she said.
Despite the uncertainty ahead, Davis says she remains grateful for her life and the support she’s received.
“I could have been gone on May 14,” she said. “So, I’m grateful.”
Davis says she’s asking for prayers, encouragement and support as she awaits the next step in her treatment, including assistance through her GoFundMe account.
