Jimmy Kimmel used his acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards to take aim at US President Donald Trump.
The host won Best Talk Show at the awards, held on Sunday (January 4) in Santa Monica, California. He used the time to thank the people who supported him during a heated feud with the Trump Administration which saw him temporarily taken off air last September.
“Thanks to all the writers and actors and producers and union members, many of you who are in this room, who supported us, who really stepped forward us and reminded us that we do not take free speech for granted in this city or in this country,” he said during the ceremony. “Your actions were important, and we appreciate them.”
He then took a swipe at Donald Trump himself, coming just over a week after his alternative Christmas message on Channel 4 in the UK, which featured an anti-Trump monologue.
“And most of all, I want to thank our president, Donald Jennifer Trump, without whom, we would be going home empty-handed tonight,” Kimmel said during his acceptance speech.
“So, thank you, Mr. President, for all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day. It’s been a banner couple of weeks, and we can’t get wait to get back on the air tomorrow night to talk about them. Thank you, everyone.”
ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! In September, after the host accused the MAGA movement of attempting to exploit the murder of Charlie Kirk, with Trump celebrating the news, but the show was reinstated after just six days after an outcry from the entertainment industry.
The show would later take several days’ hiatus to mourn the death of Cleto Escobedo III, the leader of his in-house band, who died on November 11 at the age of 59.
